Dr. Timothy Holian is a lecturer of German at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and typically teaches German at the Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels. Along with these, Dr. Holian also teaches classes on German Civilization, German Language and Culture Through Film, German Literature, and occasional independent studies. He is currently the advisor for the German Club along with Sigma Delta, the UWW chapter of Delta Phi Alpha, the National German Honor Society.
Dr. Holian was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, a city with strong German immigration roots. This meant it was both easy and common to gravitate towards the German language and aspects of German culture that survived there. Staying in Ohio for his education, Dr. Holian received his BA, MA, and Ph.D from the University of Cincinnati.
Since he started working for the UW System in 2006, Dr. Holian has worked at UW-Waukesha and UW-Rock County before joining UW-Whitewater in 2013. During this time, he has earned the UW-Rock County Arthur A. Kaplan Award in the 2014-2015 academic year. This award was in recognition of outstanding contributions made to education by faculty and staff of the UW Colleges.
Currently, Dr. Holian focuses his research within the field of German-American Studies. He investigates the contributions of German immigrants to the history and culture of the United States, and more specifically on the American brewing industry and the changes and evolution that have taken place there over the years.
"I gravitated toward teaching as a career based on the excellent instruction that I received from many dedicated, exemplary teachers and faculty, in both high school and college. I wanted to both follow their lead and pay forward what I felt I "owed" them for all that they did to help make me successful, now hoping to reach some of my students and inspire them to follow the example as well, and find service to others as their calling in life."
Dr. Holian's current projects, that are intended for publication as books, include the following:
An oral history-based comprehensive examination of the role of America's small brewers (local and regional) from the end of Prohibition into the 1980s, featuring relevant excerpts from upward of a hundred personal interviews with prominent individuals in the area
A Wisconsin-specific guidebook on post-Prohibition brewers before the advent of modern craft brewing (i.e. pre-1990s), detailing their years of operation and distinctive contributions to the brewing history and beer culture of our state
